The word Hamper is derived from the French word “hanapier” which was a wicker container used to hold goblets. William The Conqueror was probably the first to introduce a hamper to England in the 11th Century.
There is a long tradition of community and social assistance related to hampers and this may have started in the 18th and 19th centuries as it was the task of a noble lady to provide charity to the poor people living on her estates.
Up until the 20th Century the Hamper was always given to the person by hand and this limited the size of the basket and contents to ensure it wasn’t too heavy and the food would only last a week or so.
In the Victorian era the hamper became a ‘social necessity’ with events such as the Henley Regatta becoming synonymous with the tradition of picnics and hampers.
